The civic engagement trip to California’s State Capitol was a very educational and unique experience. The day was filled with touring the building and meeting influential California politicians. One of my favorite parts of the tour was being able to go inside the Assembly Chambers. I learn more about how a bill becomes a law in California. I did not realize how many stages a bill must go through in order for it to move forward as a law. I also never understood why the law making process was so seemingly slow. Seeing how many people are involved in developing, voting, and passing a bill into law gave me a new perspective on our State’s legislative process.

After touring the Capitol, we were able to meet Assemblymember Grayson. We also met with legislative aides for four other Assemblymembers. I was able to speak to the legislative aide for Assemblymember Quirk who represents Union City and most of Fremont about my role as a LIFT. I shared with him my experience with Rising Sun Energy Center. Meeting Assemblymember Grayson helped me realize that connecting with politicians and voicing your opinion is easier and more welcomed than I had originally thought. Without this position, I most likely would not have had this great opportunity to network and learn more about our state’s government processes.
